DJ Career

In January of 2007 Leila recorded her first demo CD, which she called “The Great Conjunction”, with DPIM recordings. Unbeknownst to her at the time, this CD would open many doors and eventually lead to her winning several contests and engagements.

In February 2007, DJ Leila and friend DJ Ashley performed at a party called “Under-Groundhogs Day” in Poughkeepsie, NY under the names Dazed & Konfuzed. The party was their first big show as a tag set and was headlined by one of their favorite producers, Gigantor of Evol Intent. She and DJ Ashley would go on to play together at several other shows before going their separate ways in August of that same year.

In March of 2007, after spinning for less than a year, DJ Leila was approached by a regional entertainment company, Y2K Entertainment, to perform on the air during radio show. The show was recorded in Miami, FL during that year’s Winter Music Conference.

After performing at the legendary Candy Ball at Club Exit in the summer of 2007, DJ Leila was asked to become the first female crew member of the New York City based “Team Ewok”. She was later asked to be the first and only girl in the “Drum & Bass Coalition”, or DNBC, started by Poughkeepsie’s own DJ Hokilla. The DNBC’s membership also includes; Mentally Ill (Albany, NY), Praying Mantis (NYC), Big Ears (NYC), and Mikey Wisdom (NYC), among others.

Also in the summer of ’07, Leila won a contest for the best up & comer female DJ.  She gave a copy of The Great Conjunction to a friend and it was passed on to the woman throwing the party. The contest was judged (and the party thrown by) legendary DJ and turntablist Jen Mas (NYC). Leila easily won and it landed her a gig playing at the fifth Women on Wax party held at Club Love in New York City. Leila’s popularity grew and she began garnering frequent bookings in and around New York City, at clubs such as The Place and Club Exit. She was asked to join the crew at Bass Camp Recordings, and is now second in command only to DJ Praying Mantis. Together they’ve thrown several events at New York’s Bowery Poetry Club.

On January 18th 2008, DJ Leila threw her first one-off event at The Fuzebox in Albany, NY. The party was called “Tarzan vs. Jane” and featured all jungle/dnb tag sets with male versus female DJ’s. A few weeks after that, she performed at “Abstract Safari” in Wallingford, CT, where she continued to attract more fans. On Valentine’s Day 2008 DJ Leila played her first radio show for The RUSH at WMUA.

Also in February 2008, DJ Leila was flown to Bowling Green, Ohio to play at a party called “Jungle Liaison”.  She played alongside Vinyl Fatigue and EZ Sniper to an amazing crowd response. Her name is brought up frequently on regional message boards, as fans want to know when she is coming back.

It was around this time that a party called “Magically Delicious” was first posted on one of her favorite message boards; Newraveorder.com. The organizers were held a public vote to see which DJs the people wanted to have at the party. DJ Leila placed second and won a slot at the party in March. Due to the overwhelming success of the party the promoters decided to throw another party called “Rave the Vote”. It had a similar voting system, but this time with a larger selection of DJs that the public could vote for. When DJ Leila came in first place for that event, the promoters took notice. They loved her personality and saw her talent and crowd appeal and asked her to be a part of Spread the Word Productions.

DJ Leila didn’t stop there; she went on to play her first of four Konkrete Jungle shows in Buffalo, NY on April 4th 2008. In June of 2008, after spinning records for roughly two years, DJ Leila was asked to perform at the original Konkrete Jungle in New York City. She also played at Konkrete Jungle Albany as well as Konkrete Jungle New Haven. Shortly afterwards she was asked to become a resident DJ of what is now the 518 Collective (formerly Konkrete Jungle Albany) as well as Konkrete Jungle New Haven.

DJ Leila has had several bookings at clubs all over the Northeast with the help of the different crews and coalitions she affiliates with. She continues to play shows all over the country, most recently in Tucson, AZ, opening up for Evol Intent. She also took the opportunity to perform on a local Tuscon radio show at the KXCI studios.
